Art Songs ~ Solo Vocal with Piano

What are big girls made of? (Marge Piercy) 1999

This song was composed for Erin Young, soprano at her graduate degree recital at Boston University.  Marge Piercy is a brilliant writer, and it was a challenge to compose such a long and varied texts featuring phrases such as “If only we could like each other raw” and “topiary hedges.”  The poem helps us to look at the roles that women still feel they need to fit into, whether 1999 or ten years later.
